Senior Provincial Champions to be decided this weekend in Calgary and Edmonton

2016-09-02

72 teams from across the province will be competing over the course of the long weekend with all finals set to take place on Monday September 5.

(September 2, 2016) The best Alberta adult club soccer teams will face off in Edmonton and Calgary this weekend where five teams in four of the 14 divisions will try to seize the opportunity to qualify for Canada Soccer’s National Club Championships this autumn. 72 teams from across the province will be competing over the course of the long weekend with all finals set to take place on Monday September 5.

After celebrating its 25th season, teams from the Alberta Major Soccer League (AMSL) will be looking to either continue their momentum or seek a fresh start in their bid for Nationals. In the men’s division, typical contenders Edmonton Scottish will look to return to Nationals and avenge their loss in the finals last year. Edmonton Scottish won the 2016 AMSL season in impressive fashion as the only undefeated team and 11 points ahead of second place finishers Calgary Callies.  Edmonton Northwest United will once again look to build off their undefeated championship season on the women’s side with hopes of qualifying for Nationals after a six year absence. They will be in tough against last year’s national champions Edmonton Victoria who will be hungry for a sixth consecutive provincial title and trip to Nationals to defend their title for a fourth year in a row. Alberta Major Soccer League games will take place at Henry Singer Park in Edmonton with the finals on Monday September 5th at 12:30 PM and 3 PM respectively. Both games will also be live streamed via Alberta Soccer’s competitions site.

The Masters Major and Classics Major competitions which highlight male and female players over the age of 35 will also feature as teams push for a spot in the Western Canadian Masters and Classics competition being held over the weekend of September 23-25 in Winnipeg. Last year’s champions Edmonton Green & Gold on the women’s side and Calgary Callies on the men’s side will be keen to book their spot at the regional competition.

Alberta Soccer will be holding a social in Edmonton to celebrate the 25th year of the Alberta Major Soccer League on Saturday night. Over the past 25 years, the AMSL has created countless opportunities for adult players to continue to play soccer at the highest level. Since 1987, Alberta and the AMSL has been responsible for 10 National Championships on the women’s side and 6 National Championships on the men’s side. The league has seen national team players, semi-professional and professional players and university/college players go through its ranks year after year. The social will gather AMSL builders, players and coaches, past and present to celebrate the league’s historical successes.
